Transformers Prime Cyberverse Commander Optimus Prime Review

I got a variant!

I usually never get rare variants but here we are! I got the original Prime Cyberverse Commander Optimus with a maskless face. This version is apparently quite rare in comparison to the masked one.

He’s not that sought after, but it’s still neat to have a hard to get variant of something. Let’s take a look at this rare boi!

Vehicle mode

Optimus turns into a long nosed truck like the original Bayverse Optimus but he’s painted like G1 Optimus. The proportions are bit off but it’s still a good looking truck mode.

There’s no really obnoxious kibble here but the seam lines are quite noticeable. There’s enough colour and detail on display here that things aren’t boring.

For playability, Optimus can roll nicely on all 6 of his wheels and he has plenty of weapon ports for you to arm him up with.

Transformation

The transformation is surprisingly complex for something this small. The best way to describe it is a simplified version of the ROTF Leader Optimus transformation.

Robot mode

Optimus turns into a pretty show accurate robot, both in terms of sculpt and paint. He’s not as accurate as the First Edition Voyager Optimus but he has one big advantage over that guy. His chest windows aren’t faux parts.

That amazes me.

Optimus has a surprisingly high amount of posability for a bot his size. I’m really happy that his head can rotate. His arms go in and out as well as rotate at the shoulders. His elbows are ball-jointed. His hips are ball-jointed and he has bending knees.

Gimmicks

Like the other Prime Cyberverse Commanders, Optimus has clear plastic parts for some seriously effective light piping that you can use with the light up parts from the Prime Cyberverse playsets. Or any light source that’s strong enough.

The effect is actually really cool looking.

His guns are also made of clear blue plastic. They’re also big relative to Optimus himself.

Toy or collectible?

At this point, more collectible than toy.

For some reason, the Cyberverse scale figures are harder to find compared to the mainline figures. Which means they’re quite a bit more expensive than they used to be when they were first released.

That being said, if you can find Optimus for a decent price, he’d be a great gift for a kid.

Closing

Like his Beast Hunters incarnation, Optimus is a great and competent Legends scaled figure. Anyone who collects smaller scale Transformers should go hunt down Optimus down… even if he is pretty pricey these days.

If you’re a variant hunter, get the unmasked one like me!
